Mission Statement

The Tazewell County House of Hope is organized to provide emergency housing to female victims of domestic violence and their children, while offering wrap-around services to both mother and child in order to break the cycle of violence disrupting and endangering their lives. It is our goal to empower these victims to break the cycle of domestic violence.

The Tazewell County House of Hope is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization that was established on April 16, 1998 when a group of local citizens joined together to offer hope to female victims of domestic violence and their children residing in Tazewell County. Our shelter has five dorm / bedrooms, which can room twenty clients. The remainder of the house consists of two kitchens, four bathrooms with showers for six, a children’s playroom, a family / meeting room, two offices and storage closets. Our staff includes a full-time director and three part-time employees.

In 1993, Tazewell County had nineteen cases of domestic battery placed on probation. By 1997, nearly 500 were on probation for domestic battery and related offenses. An even more frightening realization is that these staggering numbers account for only those cases that drew police responses. The House of Hope opened in May of 2000 to serve these victims. We’ve provided a safe haven for over 400 women and children since opening. Every 12 seconds a woman is battered, often with children as witnesses.
